On this day, in 1943, the remnants of the Northern pocket of Wehrmacht forces and their allies under General Strecker, surrendered. This marked the official end of one of the bloodiest battles ever fought, although up to  10,000 German troops continued the fight in isolated pockets over the next month.

Here, a number of German POWs can be seen being led away from a large grain elevator, a site of much intense fighting during the battle. Of a reputed 110,000 German survivors of the battle, only 6,000 would ever return home.
