On the 19th and 20th September 1863, the battle of Chickamauga took place in denseley wooded terrain just south of Chattanooga. Fought between the Union Army of Cumberland under Major General William Rosencrans (pictured above, left) and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under General Braxton Bragg (above, right), it was one of the bloodiest and costliest battles of the American Civil War and resulted in a hard-fought victory for the Confederates.
