US Heavy Tanks of World War II: The M6 and America’s never-built heavy tank projects
Although the medium tank proved to be the most successful type of World War II, the United States also developed heavy tank projects through the war. This book would focus on the main outcome of the programmes, the M6 that saw limited production but no combat, while also covering the US projects to design other heavy tanks in World War II and through to 1946–47.
French Light Cruisers of World War II
The French Navy went to war in 1939 with two classes of light cruiser, the 1920s Duguay-Trouin-class, and the more modern La Galissonnières, as well as the unique Émile Bertin and the training cruiser Jeanne d’Arc. On the stocks was the first of the planned De Grasse-class, although this would not be launched until 1946. Designed for Mediterranean and Atlantic duties, as well as operating in France’s colonies in Indochina, these ships had varied wartime experiences. After service in the Allied cause, a number fought for Vichy after the armistice, some were later scuttled at Toulon, while others joined the Allies, and several survived to have postwar careers.
Tanks on Okinawa 1945
The joint US Army-Marine Tenth Army that fought to take Okinawa had to tackle exceptionally well-prepared Japanese defences. This book would explore the tanks and other armour that fought in the last great island battle, their modification and tactics to survive in the face of Japanese suicide attacks and effective antitank weaponry, and their roles and effectiveness in the bloody victory.
Warships at Dunkirk 1940
An operation popularly famous for the actions of the ‘little ships’, this New Vanguard instead concentrates on the warships in the Dunkirk evacuation – the vessels that were at the core of the operation. A multinational flotilla was assembled for the high-risk rescue, from Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. While destroyers were the most powerful type to be extensively used in Operation Dynamo, a wide variety of warships saw action, from the anti-aircraft cruiser Calcutta to minesweepers and naval trawlers.
The PLA Rocket Force: China’s ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles
Responsible for the strategic and tactical missiles of the People’s Liberation Army, the PLA Rocket Force boasts the world’s largest land-based missile force. It is both China’s nuclear deterrent and part of China’s offensive capability, intended to project power across the region. This book would explore the equipment, capabilities, and organization of China’s missile command.
