Hessian Jäger vs Continental Light Infantryman: American Revolution 1775–83

Fighting alongside British forces in North America, the rifle-armed specialists known as the Jäger provided the Crown Forces with valuable expertise in open-order fighting. As the American Revolutionary War raged on, their Patriot opponents fielded light infantrymen equipped and trained to counter these German skirmishers in a host of battles throughout the Thirteen Colonies.

Italian Soldier vs Austro-Hungarian Soldier: World War I 1915–18

The entry of Italy into World War I opened a new front, as Italian forces confronted the Austro-Hungarian troops tasked with defending the Alps. As the war of movement swiftly gave way to trench warfare, both sides’ fighting men were pitched into a series of savage attritional battles made particularly arduous by the harsh environmental conditions.

Eighth Army Soldier vs Italian Soldier: North Africa 1941–43

As Allied and Axis forces clashed on the Mediterranean Front, the multiple national contingents serving as part of the British Eighth Army confronted Italian troops fighting alongside the German forces deployed to North Africa. From the Allied effort to relieve besieged Tobruk in late 1941 to the second battle of El Alamein in October–November 1942, the two sides met repeatedly in battle.

Royal Marine Commando vs German Soldier: Normandy 1944

Pitched into combat in June 1944 during the D-day landings and their immediate aftermath, the Royal Marine Commandos won a matchless reputation as assault infantry at Langrune-sur-Mer, Franceville-Plage and Port-en-Bessin, while their German opponents fought with determination to hold their positions and throw the Allied troops back.

US Soldier vs Fallschirmjäger: Normandy 1944

As the battle of Normandy reached its grim climax in the summer of 1944, the US Army soldiers pitched into combat in the Saint-Lô sector confronted a notably formidable element of Nazi Germany’s armed forces – the Fallschirmjäger, the Luftwaffe’s airborne troops. Both sides would be challenged to the limit and beyond in the fighting for Saint-Lô and its environs.
