The first major battle to be fought by regulars of the US Army and the People's Army of Vietnam during the Vietnam War, the battle of Ia Drang began on 14th November 1965 and continued for four days. The battle took place at two landing zones (LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany) in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam as part of the US offensive codenamed Operation Silver Bayonet. The outcome of the conflict was inconclusive with both sides claiming victory.
