A Waterloo Medal

Just before I went off to Virginia for the Military History Weekend I was lucky enough to go to a reception at Apsley House, the London residence of the Duke of Wellington, laid on by Waterloo 200. The event was part of their ongoing work in coordinating and encouraging the celebration of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Those involved include members of the British aristocracy, European ambassadors, academics, military historians, heritage organisations and various members of the armed services.

At the event four descendants of men who fought at Waterloo attended as part of an exhibition put on with the help of Find My Past. Louise Todd was there representing her ancestor Private Lewis MacDonald of the 92nd Highlanders and she had his actual Waterloo medal. I thought you might like to see the pictures here:

After the Battle Lewis was promoted to Ensign and posted to Kingston, Jamaica. Like so many men posted their he died soon after, quickly followed by his wife. A friend adopted his son and took him back to Caithness where the family still live.

It was a very enjoyable reception and actually getting to see a Waterloo medal was very special.
