Roman Army Units in the Western Provinces (3): 4th-5th Centuries AD
Unit Location Table
By Dr Raffaele D’Amato (September 2024)
The following table lists known units of the Western Roman army in the mid-late 4th and early 5th centuries, with locations and dates where identified. Variations in the source spellings are indicated with a forward slash /. Apparent contradictions or duplications may be due to replacement formations of earlier units; changes of unit titles over time; or to the posting of detachments to different fronts (for instance, see various entries following ‘Legio II Augusta’ and ‘Legio II Flavia’). Category abbreviations: COM = Legio Comitatensis; P’COM = Legio Pseudocomitatensis; PAL = Legio Palatina; LIM = Limitanei; RIP = Ripenses; VEX = Vexillationes (detachments); UID = unidentified.
Locations are indicated in this order: placename if known, or diocese name if not; see paperback edition of MAA 557 for list of dioceses. Then (bracketed), province name/s within the diocese, if known (again, see paperback edition); then dates or periods of sources, many of which are imprecise (e.g ‘395-430’, referring to the Notitia Dignitatum). Note that some placenames were duplicated in different provinces: e.g. Bononia, in both Belgica II and Pannonia II. Often-repeated names of provinces may be abbreviated: e.g., simply ‘Lug.’ for Gallia Lugdunensis; ’Max. Caes.’ for Maxima Caesariensis; and ‘Brit. I’ or ‘Pann. II’ for Britannia Prima and Pannonia Secunda, etc.
British provinces
Due to the scarcity and imprecision of late sources, the sequence and boundaries of these are still disputable after AD 296, but main sources list them as follows:
AD 43-c.197: Britannia (capital Colchester until mid-60s, then London).
c.197-c.296: Britannia Superior, south (capital London), and Britannia Inferior, north (capital York).
From c.296: Britannia Prima or I, south of line roughly from Gloucester eastwards to London; and Britannia Secunda or II, north of this.
At some later date: Flavia Caesariensis, possibly north from the Gloucester-London line to another irregular west-east line between the Mersey and Humber estuaries; and Maxima Caesariensis, north from there to Hadrian’s Wall.
However, an alternative interpretation gives Maxima Caesariensis south-east England from the south coast northward to the Wash, and westward to an irregular north-south line from Gloucester down to Portchester; Britannia I, south-west England (capital Cirencester?); Flavia Caesariensis (capital Lincoln), the territory from Gloucester eastwards to the Wash, and north to a Mersey-Humber line; and Britannia II, from there up to Hadrian’s Wall. A suggested but unconfirmed province of ‘Valentia’ has been variously placed between the Wall and the Clyde-Forth line (capital Carlisle?), or even in Wales (capital Chester?).
