Osprey will be working from home from Tuesday 17th March. We plan to continue all our operations, while reducing risk of infection by having staff work from home. Please note that we are doing our best to manage incoming post and parcels. For the time being please refrain from sending items to our offices and please assume that items that you have sent to us, have not arrived with their intended recipient. Our priority remains the wellbeing of staff, authors, customers, freelancers, suppliers and distributors. We would like to thank all for their support whilst we transition to virtual operations.

Viewing Topic "Quarrel Between the Earl of Manchester and Oliver Cromwell: An Episode..."
  Topic Description
Posted by: baldrick This book, by David Masson and John Bruce, has until recently (2012) been put back in print (out of print since 1923). I was offered a copy just recently on the net, but must plead ignorance as to what this episode is about, and have not been able yet to obtain any information from the likes of Amazon.com as to what it is about, and whether it has relevance to the military side of the ECW. I would appreciate any members knowledge or comments on this. By-the-by, anything on Cromwell's military career seems to to sell well this side of the globe, and a Campaign title on the battle "the Dunes 1658" would be a hit!

Apologises for my bad grammar and lack of proof reading (I'm writing at 1:30am, and have had a pretty exhausting day)!

Hi Baldrick, I don't know about the quarrel itself, but I do know you can read the entire book for free on Google Books... thanks for your support of my Dunes proposal!

Baldrick In essence this was a quarrel that sprang from Cromwell's criticism of the Earl of Manchester's conduct at the 2nd Battle of Newbury. Cromwell accused the earl of holding back possibly as a gambit to conceal his own lacklustre performance. The quarrel simmered through the winter of 1644/45 and one of its outcomes was the New Model Army and the Self Denying ordinance. The book has some interesting detail tucked away but basically a collection of contemporary materials transcribed and edited. As to a Battle of Dunes 'Campaign' it is a lot of work as it needs to draw on a combination of Spanish and French source material, the English contribution (both Royalist and Cromwellian Commonwealth) was only a part of the story. I doubt there is anyone within the Osprey stable with the necessary linguistic ability and research interest capable of doing it.

Thomas Mante, thankyou so much for your helpful and clear summary of the book. Anything that leads to the formation of the New Model Army would be relevant to me, and as I know little about the Earl of Manchester, and could definitely brushup on the workings of the Eastern Association of Parliaments Army, it certainly will be worthwhile reading the book. A late, but heartfelt, thankyou to ospreyfan1 too for guiding me to accessing the books content for free on googlebooks. Lastly, regarding ospreyfan1's suggestion of the Battle of the Dunes 1658 Thomas, possibly Rene Chartrand (who mainly deals in Napoleonics) could be ideal, with his multi-lingual knowledge of French, Spanish, and English languages and military sources, might be an ideal candidate to write a well-rounded campaign title on it.
