Posted by: Simon McShannon Hi Folks Being a big reader of Ancient Greek History, whats the chances/options of Osprey putting together books (MAA, Fortress etc) on these famous people from the Island of Crete and Sanotrini Osprey could cover the cultures development through to achean and 'sea people' incursions to finally the dramatic yet mystical destruction of the culture and the beginning of the so-called 'dark ages' of Greece what do people think?

Hi 'George' Its certainly a period worth looking at especially the archaeological finds, some good locations are the Palace of Konossos on Crete and the scattering of sites on Santorini and Mainland Greece It is now believed that the mythical site of 'Atlantis' was in fact the Island of Santorini, and the seismic and volcanic eruption on the Island led to the destruction of the Minion Civilisation, heralded in the 'dark ages' of Greece and the growth of Mycenean people On another note, Im looking at writing for Osprey and I noticed your comments regarding Bonaparte's Italian Campaigns, so its an area I would look into Si

well, Simon, this is of course a fascinating subject! but doing a book on Minoan Military History? How? What oi we have to go on? . the "ship fresco" shows some ships in an coastal environment, plus some warriors with their tower shiled covering their bodies! Thus, we know one had a Boar Teeth Helmet, one something else on the head, armed with spears and the tower shiled was a large rectangle.... . the "captain of the black guard" seem to indicate that there were Black Mercenaries, armed with two or three javelins and no shields, propably under Minoan Command... . you have some Swords and/or daggers and spear-heads, small examples of Fortifications..., but that's about it...!!! I am not aware of more depictions of Minoan Warriors! we do not know anything of their Campaigns, not even how their Political Organisation looked like?? Was Knossos the Capital of a King uniting the whole Island? Or was Kreta an Alliance of Independent Palace States? Or were they even hostile to one annother?? . All Books I know on the subject include much guesswork and are mainly directed towards Minoan Cultural and Artistic History..., not to their Political History, much less something so specific as Military History! . We simply know too Little about them! Is there really scope for Osprey?

There already is Warrior: Early Aegean Warrior 5000–1450 BC in which contents on fortifications and naval activities are included. It focuses on archeological findings. An alternative can be M & L: Theseus and the Minotaur which might contain some Cultural aspects of the civilization. I would prefer a book on less well known subject for the series though. Since I have found another book on King Arthur about whom I have read so many books to be quite boring.

And of course, Naval activity itself is a speculation. Although a logical one based on archeological findings. No written account about them.

Hi I know your argument all to well Nightbird and Achim Im afraid to say Granted there is very little evidence and much hypothesis which I wholly agree with you etc I read a forum blog about some ancient battle 1450BC or some such date and I had the same thoughts I would be a nice idea IF there was something put together on the Minoans though albeit depending on archaeology etc

It seems like I have made some sort of objection to your post. Sorry about that but in fact I think a well written book mainly drawing on archaeology is not a problem. Early Aegean Warrior 5000–1450 BC is only Osprey book on Minoans as I know of and the time scale seems to show it all. Cultural and Artistic History of Minoans are interesting enough for me but since Osprey is a military history publisher, I think any future title might be basically military history book. Even so, I think a well written and well illustrated title on the civilization which might contain other aspects along with military history would be welcome for me.

Also, there are several titles on Minoan and Mycenaean Greece. If we include Mycenaeans, there can be a good general military title. I think we are already mixing them up even in this thread I guess....
