I've been wanting to see a Campaign title on the Chinese invasion of Vietnam for a while. Seems like most people don't even know this thing happened. I spoke to my young Vietnamese hairdresser about it, and while she seemed to know at least a little about the US war in Vietnam, she didn't know there ever was a Chinese invasion.

The problem with this is getting reliable information, given that the same regimes are still in power in both countries and neither are exactly the most 'open' nations. But for that, this would be a good shout.

What about the naval engagement between Red China and the South vietnamese navy? The Vietnamese lost an amphibious landing craft full of marines in the occasion.

Oh guys, I would also love a well-detailed volume of the Cambodian-Vietnamese war of 1979-1989,a much bigger affair.

I have met a couple of Chinese veterans who served in this campaign. From their point of view it was a debacle. The CPA logistics system collapsed into chaos, leaving some units short of ammunition and others starving. In military terms it was an overgrown and futile border skirmish, but it had a major effect on China out of all proportion to its relevance. It put the skids under the Gang Of Four and fatally undermined their prestige. Their overthrow and the reformed communist government of 1984 put an end to Maoism and brought in the economic system which has made China what it is today. If a book on this subject is published, it should I think contain a tailpiece laying out these facts.

That would be a good conclusion for the book.
