Posted by: .George Washington What is the opinion on a MAA on Ancient Vietnamese Armies? Maybe this book could talk about the wars with China.

Yes definitely. Vietnams wars with China set the stage for the Vietnam conflict with the US. The Vietnamese used the very same tactics they used against China, against the US. The wars toughened the Vietnamese, and got them used to war. This is why they fought the US so long, and so hard. They were used to war from their history.

Highly obscure subject with a tiny audience, wouldn’t sell. Bad idea, simple as that!

Osprey also has series about ancient and medieval China, a book on war elephants, so it's not that unlikely. But I think it would have to be something like "Medieval South East Asia" and include Siam and Angkor. That could work.

i think Wicked is on the right track here! on such an relatively obscure área and time, Osprey will have to widen the Cultures covered in such a book! Burma, Angkor/Khmer, Champa, Thai/Siam, Dia Viet...., as he says..., Medieval Southeast Asian Armies! Even then, i would see this as acommercial gamble at best!

Wicked/Achim – I agree, this title would need the broad brush approach you suggest covering the other races/armies you mention to appeal to a wider (although I still think limited) audience to make it even remotely viable.

As an Osprey reader who hasn’t read a book title exclusively dealing with medieval armies of South East Asia (Preferably including Indonesia and Philipines), I would buy such title because of that very reason.

I support a book about southeast Asia (that peninsular that is today south of China and east of India and maybe including the islands to Australia), before the europeans arrived! Osprey have already published about fighting ships, siege weapons and elephants for this area, so the people that was at the ships & elephants, and sieges, is a gap. But not only Vietnam, personaly I am more interrested about the Khmer-kingdom, builders of Ankor Wat. A title as “Ancient/Medieval southeast asian armies” (but my biggest problem is “ancient” & “medieval” when dealing with non-european history!).
