Are you ready for the release of Stargrave: The Last Prospector? We spoke with the award-winning author Joseph A. McCullough about the new Wild West inspired supplement for Stargrave. Take it away Joe!

It all began with the title, The Last Prospector. I’m not sure where it came from, or why, but it just popped into my head one day, and wouldn’t go away. I admit, on the surface, it doesn’t sound like a supplement for Stargrave, it sounds more like a western. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how close westerns and science-fiction have been over the years. There’s obvious connections like Westworld, of course, but I was thinking more like the western themes and tropes that can be found in Star Wars and Firefly, for example.

So, I decided that this book would be my ‘western in space’ book, and as such, it starts with a gunfight in the saloon! Of course, the saloon is in a space station, in a neglected star system, sitting on the edge of what was once civilized space. One might even say its sits on the ‘frontier’. And that is really the main theme of the book – exploring this frontier system, interacting with the local power-players, getting into all kinds of trouble, and trying to discover the whereabouts of a long-lost friend, the prospector.

Along the way, the players will have to visit (and probably shoot it out in) old mines, barren asteroids, and even a place called ‘The Devil’s Fruit Bowl’. You’ll have to steal treasure from beneath the nose of a jungle dragon, fight off bandits as they whizz round a town on their bikes, and meet-up with a revolutionary in the derelict levels of the great space-station.

Hopefully, playing the game will be a fun, cinematic experience, but, unlike most of the campaigns I’ve written before, this one allows the players a lot more freedom to chart their own course… but I’ll talk more about that next time!

Stargrave: The Last Prospector is available from all good game stores from April 28th.
