Tanks at Monte Cassino 1944

Standing between the Allied armies and Rome, the mountains of central Italy were a long way from being classic tank country. This book explains the role that tanks played in these crucial battles, as deployed by British, Indian, New Zealand and South African elements of Eighth Army, by Fifth Army (American and French) and the German Army.

The HAWK Missile System

Entering service in 1960, the mobile, medium-range HAWK was an iconic US weapons system of the Cold War. At the cutting edge of technology when introduced, its reliability and capability were improved over the years, until it was finally replaced by the Patriot and Stinger systems. As well as serving the US for three decades, and being deployed to key conflict zones from Vietnam to Iraq, the HAWK was also widely sold abroad, where it saw combat in the hands of Israel, France, Kuwait, and Iran.

Miniguns: Rotary machine guns 1963–present

Developed during the Vietnam War to provide helicopter crews with reliable full-automatic firepower, the General Electric minigun adapted the M61 autocannon for rifle-calibre ammunition, creating a relatively light weapon capable of sustained automatic fire without overheating. It became a key weapon for the airborne war over Vietnam, being used in many aircraft and weapons systems, including fixed-wing gunships. Since Vietnam it has remained a stalwart of many armed forces worldwide, in a range of applications.

Tanks in the Battle of Germany: Western Front

In early 1945, the Western Allies’ ground war would finally reach German soil, following Hitler’s last armoured offensives that winter. This examines the tanks and armoured units that fought the last few months of the war in the West, as the most advanced AFVs of the war fought in the hands of an exhausted but still fighting German Army, and the rampaging Western Allied armies.

US Armoured Funnies of World War II

Less well-known than the British ‘Funnies’ of D-Day and beyond, this looks at the specialist tanks the US Army developed for the campaign in Europe, with vehicles including rocket tanks, mine exploders, bridgelayers, and tank recovery vehicles.
