Letters from the front image

The Korean War saw the final deployment of the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars before it was merged with the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars which formally became The Queen’s Own Royal Irish Hussars on 24th October 1958. A cavalry regiment in the British Army, the 8th served in Korea between 1950 and 1952 and saw action in the battle of Imjin River, one of the hardest fought engagements that the British Army had undertaken since World War II.

This photograph was taken from bestselling author Andrew Robert’s fantastic Letters from the Front: From the First World War to the Present Day, published this month. Letters from the Front draws together a collection of letters housed at the Imperial War Museum, London, sent by British and Commonwealth troops from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, from the front lines to their loved ones back home and reveals a shared, poignant insight into the lives of individual soldiers in the thick of war.
