Part of the Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War, the Battle of Seven Pines took place on May 31st and June 1st 1862 and concluded with a tactical stalemate. The battle is particularly notable for the severe wounding of Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston and his subsequent replacement by the renowned Robert E. Lee who continued on to lead the Confederate troops to a series of improbable victories throughout the Civil War before surrendering to overwhelming Union forces at Appomattox.
