WWIYesterday brought the sad news that the last combat veteran of World War I has passed away in Australia. An era has truly ended. But the British people have made a promise that is no doubt echoed in many countries: “We will remember them.” Well, it is easy to remember the living. They come to Christmas dinner and appear on T.V. to lay wreaths on Armistice Day. Now that they are gone, how will we remember? We must tend their graveyards, keep clean their memorials, and protect their monuments. Most importantly, we must read their stories, read about their glory and triumphs, their defeats and tragedies, and the horrors they endured. We must learn, teach, and protect their history, and in so doing, we will keep our promise.
