Sunday Photo - The Battle of the Bloody Ridge

In Military History, Featured

The Battle of the Bloody Ridge was fought from 12-14 September, 1942. It saw the Allies, mainly consisting of men from the United States Marine Corps, successfully beat back the attacking Japanese. Behind them was Henderson Field, an important airfield that the Allies had captured earlier in the Guadalcanal campaign. The attack was as close as the Japanese would ever come to taking Henderson Field.

The photo below shows a US Marine standing near some of the fighting positions on Hill 123 after the Battle of the Bloody Ridge.

If you are interested in reading more about the Battle of the Bloody Ridge and the Guadalcanal campaign on the whole then take a look at Campaign 284: Guadalcanal 1942-43 by Mark Stile, with illustrations by Peter Dennis.
