Sunday Photo - The Battle of the Bulge

In Military History, Featured

On 25th January 1945 the Battle of the Bulge concluded with a decisive Allied victory. Fought over the winter months of 1944-45, the battle was the last major Nazi German offensive against Western Allied forces during World War II.

In the below photograph, a British Sherman "Firefly" tank patrols the Meuse river at Namur in December 1944. In a bid to protect the river crossings at Givet, Dinant and Namur, forces were ordered to take up position along the riverbanks.

To read more about the command strategies, tactics and opposing forces of the battle, take a look at Steven J Zaloga's Battle of the Bulge 1944 (1): St Vith and the Northern Shoulder and Battle of the Bulge 1944 (2): Bastogne.
