This piece of artwork illustrates the combat that took place on 6 September 1940, between Flt Lt Wirold Urbanowicz of No 303 (Polish) Squadron and the Bf 109E-3 (Werknummer 1380) of Hauptmann Joachim Schlichting, commanding III./JG 27. Schlichting's aircraft was shot down at Shoeburyness, Essex. The pilot baled out, badly burned, and was taken prisoner.

The summer of 1943 saw squadrons of the Northolt-based 1st Polish Wing repeatedly engaged in ‘Ramrod’ operations, escorting USAAF bombers to targets on the European Continent. Wg Cdr Aleksander Gabszewicz, the Northolt Wing Leader, said in his report from the morning operation on 19 August;

‘As the Wing Leader I was leading 316 (Polish) Squadron, which was the leading Squadron in the Wing taking part in Ramrod 209, with the task of providing forward target support for 36 Marauders bombing Amiens/Glissy aerodrome. Wing took off at 1035 hrs and made straight for France. When approaching Amiens I got a warning from Operations of e/a [enemy aircraft] north of Amiens. At the same time the leader of “A” Flight, Flt Lt Jeka, saw some Huns nearby and went to attack them. I then gave the order for the whole Squadron to attack.’
