Today was the latest Shire Publishing Meeting – the make-it or break-it event where new proposals for Shire books come under the scrutiny of the whole Shire team, and are gleefully accepted, or consigned to the Publisher’s dustbin of regret. As you would expect, the titles up for a discussion at any meeting are an eclectic bunch, drawn from some of Shire’s many list areas, and sometimes unlike anything Shire has done before. Some titles are so obvious an addition to our catalogue that they need hardly any discussion at all, but others can keep us talking for hours, with opinions firmly divided. My favourite sort of project is one that, at first sight, seems like the proposition of a lunatic, but which, when thoroughly discussed, reveals itself to be something we can’t do without.Continue Reading
