This volume showcases the specially commissioned cover artwork of leading aviation artist Iain Wyllie, who has produced over 30 action-packed paintings for the world's most successful aviation series of recent years, Aircraft of the Aces. Combat reports by the aces themselves form the basis of the text, along with a brief pilot biography and technical explanation of the aircraft featured in the artwork. Contemporary photographs and a full-colour side-view profile complete each chapter, whilst the book's appendices include a selection of 28 1/72nd scale drawings and a concise tabular listing of the high-scoring aces of World War 2. Although derived from the Aircraft of the Aces series, much of the text (over 55,000 words) that accompanies the artworks within this book has been specially sourced for Legends of World War 2, alongside a number of new profile artworks and photographs.

Biographical Note

Tony Holmes has worked as Osprey's aviation editor since 1989, having previously served as an author/photographer for the publisher whilst living in Australia. Working as a freelance editor/author since 1994, he still manages the aviation list for Oxford-based Osprey Publishing and ‘Aircraft of the Aces - Legends of World War 2' is his 27th book for Osprey.Iain Wyllie's reputation for technically accurate artwork has been cemented through his partnership with Osprey over the years. The cover artist for both the Aircraft of the Aces and Combat Aircraft series, Wyllie has created more than 60 artworks for Osprey since 1994. He trained as a naval architect before working as a design draughtsman and technical illustrator in the field of die-cast models and plastic kits. Although he won prizes for his aviation art in his early twenties, Iain Wyllie's main interest remained marine art. Much later, he took up airbrush illustration, while still working in oil and gouache. Today, he works in gouache and acrylic, producing artwork for prints, book jackets and private commissions. Specialising in aviation, marine and wildlife, Iain Wyllie lives in Crossgar, Northern Ireland.
